On December 3, 2000, the National AIA Board of Directors thanked Ricardo Legorreta for four and a half decades of earth-integrated, indigenously inspired architecture by awarding him the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal award.
The highest honor the AIA confers on an individual, the Gold Medal recognizes an architect whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.
"Ricardo Legorreta exemplifies all the qualities we hold dear, qualities we venerate in those upon whom we bestow our highest honor," said the board member who nominated Legorreta for the award.
During his 45-year career, Legorreta has successfully integrated interior design, landscape architecture, and architecture into a single discipline. His architecture, attuned to the land and respectful of Latin American traditions of privacy and simplicity, has won widespread and international acclaim. By mastering the spectrum of the building process, he has created structures possessing uncanny color and light, structures that marry monumentality and tradition.
In 2006 the community of San Miguel was gifted with the completion of a private home from this illustrious Architect. It is another masterpiece of design. This home is now available for rental on a limited basis.
